Local Motion started out as WENG Motors ( Where Everyone Needs to Go ), a true connected platform for local mobility. Since 1/3 of vehicle trips as Americans are less than 5 miles, WENG Motors wanted to encourage and enable low cost, local transportation and celebrate the physical surroundings. Hence the open air, PEV platform and visual communication with users on the front of vehicle and seats.
In 2012, the company was rebranded to Local Motion and subsequently dropped the vehicle platform and focused exclusively on the fleet market with a vehicle agnostic, HaaS approach. Local Motion customers were commercial fleet operators like Google, City of Sacramento, City of San Francisco and Google shopping express.
Local Motion was sold to Zipcar in late 2015.
